“A Friendly Reminder” is a mixed-media artwork on wood that combines traditional and contemporary elements. A real glass bottle is part of the painting and a gold flame made of 21k gold leaf emerges from it. The foreground is covered in champagne chalk. A violet LED light shines from the back through the bottle and can be switched on to activate the flame. The work is rooted in a dream in which the artist runs from the police along a river toward a house on a hill, pursued for unknown reasons. At the same time and on the same street in Berlin, Maria B., a woman the same age as the artist, was shot and killed by police under false allegations. This work serves as an homage to Maria B. The 21k gold flame represents both the sacred and institutional authority and the symbolic power of fire as revolt. The activation of the light mirrors how resistance and awakening can be ignited. The work draws attention to violence, injustice, and the tension between power and revolt.
